NADIA’S BODY PAIN

Nadyia is a 33-year-old engineer

"I feel like I'm recovering from a street fight every day"

Her Escalating Pain

Nadyia, a mother of 3 and a wife, suffered an on-the-job injury that caused her to experience daily muscle stiffness and soreness in her neck. Her localized neck pain progressed to the point where she could not flex or rotate her neck.

Furthermore, she could not rotate or move her left arm and shoulder. Her doctor prescribed pain medications and muscle relaxants which provided her minimal relief. She lost her appetite, couldn't sleep, and couldn't keep up with daily tasks or childcare.

Women are five times more likely to develop chronic musculoskeletal pain than men. Women with fibromyalgia suffer from multiple painful points throughout the upper body.

Fibromyalgia causes widespread muscle tightness in her upper body and trunk associated with painful trigger points. Trigger points occur when disordered muscle and nerve units are activated by pressure or touch, as well as with voluntary movement.

Women often undergo extensive medical workups that yield no clear results and can delay or confuse therapeutic plan.

Her Plan

Nadyia suffered from fibromyalgia of the cervical spine, which common cause of chronic pain in women. She underwent neurological diagnostic testing to rule out other problems that could cause her symptoms. After a neurological exam and routine brain and nerve studies, it was determined that the cause of her painful muscles and related symptoms was consistent with fibromyalgia.

She started sensory and motor therapy to recalibrate her disordered nervous system pathways, reduce her dependence on medications, and restore her body mechanics.
